A great physical therapy session can brighten one’s day. Whether it be a massage, a physiotherapist re-aligning our back, or a personal trainer putting us through our paces, we always leave the session feeling brighter, even if we feel sorer.

Physical therapists seem to know exactly where our pressure points, misalignments and weak spots are and target their treatments and exercises specifically to those locations. Even though it can cause us short-term discomfort, we feel better and stronger because of it.

It’s the same with spiritual therapy from God. He knows every weak spot in our faith, misalignment in our values with His, and aspect of our character that needs development.

A spiritual therapy session with God can be a single moment or a whole season in our lives and involves our more difficult, confronting, painful and challenging life experiences. We often see these as the darker moments and seasons of our lives. It is into the darkness that God’s light shines brightest. It can often be hard to see God at work for our benefit during these moments and seasons, but like the pre-dawn light, what initially seems dark and difficult to see, becomes brighter in the light of day.

When we place our faith in Jesus, we choose the righteous path. Because of this God wants to shine His light into our darkness. He wants to strengthen our faith, bring our values in-line with His, and cultivate an enduring and resilient character through spiritual therapy.

His spiritual therapy sessions will never end. Not until the day we stand before Him in heaven in the fullness of His light and glory. When we embrace them, everyday becomes brighter as we see the growth and change that He is bringing forth within us.

When we find ourselves under pressure, or our values and faith being tested, instead of seeing darkness and discomfort, we need to embrace the light and recognise that God's spiritual therapy grows and strengthens us, so that we are better prepared to handle life in the future. As we do this, we need to ask ourselves what God is trying to change within us and embrace Him and the spiritual therapy He is applying to our lives, because our days will be much brighter when we do.

Reflection

Take a moment to reflect on a difficult moment or period of your life. How did God use that difficult experience to grow and change you? What aspects of your character developed because of it? How did your faith in God grow and your values re-align with His?

Prayer

Father God, thank you for working through my life to grow and develop me to become everything you know that I can be. Help me to see your light in the darker and uncomfortable areas of my life. Show me the work that you are doing within me and how I can work with you instead of resisting you.

Affirmation

God brings light into my darkness, and positives out of the negative.

Action

At the end of your day, take some time and come into the presence of God. Speak to Him about the challenging moments of your day and ask how He was trying to use them to grow and develop you. Seek His guidance on the values, and aspects of your character and faith that He is seeking to grow and develop and commit to a plan to work with Him to develop them further.
